The IPL Auction was held on December 19th, 2019 and just like that, even before the year ended, the preparations for IPL 2020 had already begun. We saw some major buys at this year’s auctions, some heart-breaking player releases , a few interesting player-trades and also some intriguing change in leadership. By the time the auction was over, the fans were left with a bittersweet feeling.
Teams were built, though just on paper and experts started to predict the future success or failure of teams, with absolute zero proof of concept of the newly weaved teams, it’s performance and coordination amongst its players.
But, that’s the general rule of thumb, isn’t it? The team that looks better on paper usually turn out to be victorious more often than not. Well, not every time does a Rajasthan Royals pull off a dark horse smashing through public and expert opinions alike of being under-dogs and lift the trophy as they did way back in IPL 2008.
So, let us indulge into our very own evaluation of the scenario and find out which 3 teams can win the IPL 2020. Again, this is just an evaluation of the teams on the basis of the recent changes it underwent and the recent performances of its players. It’s not a prediction of any sort. Although, if it were to come true in the future, that would be something fantastical.
#3. Sunrisers Hyderabad
The Sunrisers Hyderabad probably has the best blend of Indian and Foreign players and look one of the strongest teams on paper. Under Kane Williamson, Sunrisers have already exhibited their talents in the past few years. And now, with the addition of Mitchell Marsh and Fabian Allen, they look even more formidable.
Sunrisers didn’t go for extravagant purchases in the IPL 2020 auctions. But then again, they already have a perfect contingent of players of their own. The top three itself is perhaps one of the best in the world- David Warner, Kane Williamson and Johnny Bairstow.
David Warner’s form should be a close watch with the coming India vs Australia series coming up next month. Players like Vijay Shankar and Siddharth Kaul have already proven the worth of their salt. And then Rashid Khan and Mohammad Nabi, the two Afghans bring a lot to the table with their all-round cricket. And their bowling attack is lead by the experienced Bhuvaneshwar Kumar. What more can u ask for?
#2. Mumbai Indians
Mumbai Indians seem to be doing everything just about right. The defending champions already had a formidable line-up but with the addition of players such as Chris Lynn, who by the way was an absolute steal at ₹2 crores and Nathan Coulter-Nile for ₹8 crores, Mumbai has consolidated their squad.
They already have Quinton de Kock and Rohit Sharma at the top of the order and with Chris Lynn joining, Mumbai Indians has one of the most bombastic trio. Jasprit Bumrah will also find a much needed bowling partner in Coulter-Nile. And with the Pandya brothers, Suryakumar Yadav and Kieron Pollard, we can expect Mumbai Indians to set IPL 2020 ablaze.
#1. Delhi Capitals
If there is a team that took the opportunity of the most recent auction and steered it to their profits, it is Delhi Capital. They started with roping in Shikhar Dhawan in a trade and then made some big and wise investments in Shimron Hetmyer, Jason Roy, Ajinkya Rahane and Alex Carey. Ishant Sharma and Ravichandran Ashwin brings great value to the bowling unit and with Kagiso Ranada and Amit Mishra, Delhi Capitals surely have their bowling base covered.
What would be interesting to see is how the Indian youngsters live up to expectations, especially with the 2020 T20 World Cup in sight. A lot would be riding on Rishabh Pant and the young captain, Shreyas Iyer. If the Indian players in the team are able to pull of a decent performance, there is no doubt that Delhi Capitals is more than capable and lifting the IPL Trophy this time.
